Applying our MKM to mobile audits

Jul 07 - MobileAudit - A Tool for Contextual Knowledge Management (Paper + Presentation) with H. Knapp, Prof. N. Prat and Prof. M. Schader

The paper is a mere follow up to our 2006 Winsys paper, which won a best paper award. It evolves around auditing in mobile environments. We presented it on the 2007 Winsys conference. You can download a preliminary version (download mobile audit working paper). You want to cite us? Get the BibTeX file.

From the abstract: In many professional activities, the ability to retrieve and store knowledge in a mobile situation is crucial. This need, together with the progress of mobile devices, has led to the emergence of mobile knowledge management. In this paper, we propose a context-aware knowledge management architecture for mobile environments and apply it to an auditing use case. We developed the MobileAudit prototype using the proposed architecture. MobileAudit enables environmental audits according to US as well as European EMAS (ISO 14001) legislation.

Infovis vs. textual languages

Mar 07 - Evaluation of information visualizations vs. language proficiency (Paper + Presentation) with D. Thoma

We presented the paper at the 2007 IASTED HCI conference in Chamonix. Feel free to download our paper (download infovis paper). You want to cite us? Get the BibTeX file.

From the abstract: In this paper we will ask the question of what proficiency in a textual language (e.g. English) has in common with eval uating information visualizations. We admit that this ques tion might not seem completely straightforward. Therefore wewill first present how experimental practice led us to this question. We hypothesize that the ability to use a visual ization (to speak the visual language) affects both objective and subjective evaluation methods. We propose to transfer the use of language testing and grammar description from linguistics to human computer interaction evaluation.

Evaluation of Uni Applicants

Mar 06 - Comparing the availability of technical equipment among university applicants. (Poster presentation) with L. Kaczmirek (I was co-author)

Poster at the 8th international conference General Online Research 2006 (GOR06), March 21-22, 2006, Bielefeld, Germany.

Visual Search on the Web

Dec 05 - Acceptance of visual search interface for the Web - design and empirical evaluation of a book search interface (Paper + Presentation) with G. Mau

Paper presentation at ISVC05 in Lake Tahoe, CA. I am more than happy to discuss our work with you, just send me an email or you can access it at Springer if you have a subscription. Moreover, you can download a slightly longer version with more statistics (download book search working paper). You want to cite us? Get the BibTeX file.

From the abstract: Theoretically, visual search interfaces are supposed to outperform list interfaces for such task types as nonspecific queries because they make use of additional semantic information (like price, date or review for a book). But why are web sites like Amazon or eBay still using classical textual list interfaces?

Visualizing SMS

Nov 05 - Evaluation of User Interfaces for Displaying Text Messages on Mobile Devices (Paper + Presentation) with P. Sütterlin and L. Kaczmirek

Paper presentation at the IASTED HCI 05 conference in Phoenix, AZ. If you like the paper please let me know. If you don't let me know, too. Feel free to download the paper for your work (download SMS Visualization Paper). Get the BibTeX for easy citing.

From the abstract: More and more information such as short text messages (SMS) or emails is stored on mobile phones. Retrieving the right information at the right time has become a diffi cult task when using traditional interfaces included in to day’s cell phones. We created two novel user interfaces (one textual and one graphical) and compared both to the classical interface for retrieving stored SMS messages in a 34-participant usability experiment.

E-Assessment

Oral presentation at the Campus Innovation conference. Please contact me for the presentation slides.

Flash, Javascript oder PHP?

Jul 05 - Flash, Javascript oder PHP? Ein technisch-methodischer Vergleich am Beispiel von Online-Bewerbungen an Universitäten (Oral Presentation, German only) with L. Kaczmirek

Oral presentation at the meeting of the section on methods of empirical research (Methodensektion) of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie in Mannheim. See the associated website for further information. In addition you can download the German abstract here.

Cross-Border Mergers and Offshoring

Jun 05 - Cross-Border Mergers and Offshoring: A quantitative Media Analysis (Paper + Presentation) - with Prof. A.Kieser, D. Thoma and Prof. R. Tracy

Paper presentation at the EGOS annual conference in Berlin. In our contribution we take a quantitative approach to tracing changes in media discourse. We demonstrate how this method captures changes in attitudes towards two controversial organizational issues: cross-border mergers and offshoring. Contact me for a copy of our work.
